Winter Sports Gear FAQ
How do I choose the right ski or snowboard size?
Skis should generally reach between your chin and the top of your head. Shorter skis are easier to turn; longer skis are more stable at speed. Snowboards should reach between your collarbone and chin. Your weight matters more than height for flex and performance.
What should I wear for cold-weather skiing?
Layer with a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid layer (fleece or lightweight down), and a waterproof/breathable shell jacket and pants. Avoid cotton. Merino wool base layers regulate temperature well across a wide range of conditions.
Do I need avalanche safety gear for backcountry skiing?
Yes. The essential trio for backcountry skiing is a beacon, probe, and shovel. You should also take an avalanche safety course before venturing into the backcountry. An airbag pack adds another layer of protection but is not a substitute for education and decision-making skills.
How often should I wax my skis or snowboard?
Wax every 3-5 days of riding for optimal performance. If the base looks white or dry, it needs wax. Hot waxing provides the longest-lasting results. Temperature-specific waxes perform better than all-temperature waxes in extreme cold or warm spring conditions.
What goggles should I buy for skiing?
Look for goggles with anti-fog coating, adequate ventilation, and a lens tint suited to your conditions. Low-light lenses (yellow, rose) work best on cloudy days. Dark lenses (black, bronze) are best for bright conditions. Interchangeable lens systems offer the most versatility.
