Originally known as the "Improved Henry" due to its patented loading gate on the side of the frame designed by Winchester's plant superintendent Nelson King, the 1866 model quickly earned its place in history. Native Americans dubbed it the "Yellow Boy" for its distinctive brass frame and it became the first true cowboy lever action rifle. With its slab-sided design, it was ideal for carrying in a saddle scabbard, making it a favorite among frontiersmen. More than 170000 were produced between 1866 and 1898 and its popularity endured long after more powerful lever guns emerged. The model 1866 was renowned worldwide, used by the forces of Benito Juarez in Mexico, the Turkish army against the Russians and notable figures of the American West, including Sioux Medicine Man Sitting Bull, Union Pacific chief engineer General Grenville Dodge and desperado Bill Doolin.
